“The Maze Runner,” one of the most exciting page turners that I have ever read in the year 2015. This book was also eventually made into a movie directed by Wes Ball. “The Maze Runner,” by James Dashner is the first book in a trilogy and it is a futuristic book with a lot of violence. I do not recommend this book for those under the age of 12; as it is inappropriate and contains many scenes of violence. Honestly, this book has similarities with other famous titles such as The Hunger Games, and Divergent, as it is based in a post-apocalyptic world where a young hero suddenly emerges and tries to fight the system which results in trials and death.

The teens stranded in the Maze had their memories wiped and have no recollection of the past, only their given names. Although their memories are wiped, they are still aware that they are trapped in the Maze and need to find a way to live and escape the dangers coming after them. The main character, Thomas is a sixteen year old boy that changes everything from the moment he enters the Maze. Thomas knows he needs to solve the Maze and lead the Gladers to safety and freedom. There are about 50 boys trapped in the Glade and there are a few boys called “Runners” that would run out during the day to map out the Maze. The Maze moves every night, creating new paths and dead ends; and that is a puzzle they need to solve.

If they do not escape the Maze before it closes, they will get hunted down by robotic spider-like creatures called Grievers and they will get killed. The walls of the Maze close at night to protect the boys from these dreadful creatures. The boys have been trapped inside the Maze for an estimated time of 2 years until Thomas comes along and triggered an ending to their captivity. Teresa, is the only female character in this book. Just like the rest of the boys, her memories are wiped and she is trapped in the Maze.

The story is very action packed and reading the book is actually better than watching the movie. Mainly because there are some changes in the movie and to me, it feels like I am watching a different story than what I have read. The second movie The Scorch Trials, which is based on the second book in the trilogy is to be released soon and I am excited to see how they have changed the story this time.
