What is advertising? It is where the advertising industry advertises about a product to people in the world. In my thought, advertising can be a very fun thing to do as it makes you laugh, cry and happy, not only that it sometimes does have special meanings/messages in it that not many people will find out. Moreover advertising has a big impact on us as we people are easily influenced by it. The advertising industry has involved tremendously over the years, as Jim Durfee stated that “ Bill Bernbach has added a new force in advertising, that is by putting the art director into the same room as the copy writer.” This enables them to have collaboration and have more creative ideas, two brains are better than one.” They also learn to look for bigger pictures when making an advertisement. The field of advertising also learned of mixing a variety of ideas together to form a better and attractive advertisement. For example, plain dull colour plane to a fruity colourful planes, from dull uniforms to colourful fashion uniforms.
In the video, one of the interview that that made an impression is that as Jim Durfee explained that; find the main core of what that product is, if it said in a strong memorable way, it is a challenge to say the right things, the right way to get a person into do something you want them to do and you can have and will have an effect on a lot of people. It teaches me that in order to make people to have interest in my advertisement, I have to look into the main core of the product, think critically of what to say and try to make it very interesting and eye catching to get people’s attention . Advertising is not just promoting a product but also promoting someone that is famous. In one of the scene of the video that caught my impression is that advertising is not just done by showing or asking someone to just stand there and advertise it, it can be done through some crazy scenes like what the video had shown promoting a luggage with a gorilla throwing it around trying to break it but it is very solid and sustainable. This shows that how good the quality is and at a reasonable price.
The part where they try to advertise milk although it has already been out in the field, they improve it even better by producing more types of milk and brands. Besides that, the main purpose of doing this is to just make sure that people do not run out of milk. Furthermore, when they tried to advertise Nike, Liz Dolan said that “its purpose is to serve the athletes but in the late 80s the definition of athletes expanded way beyond the professional endorsers.” Not only that, they had a slogan for it called “Just Do It”. This makes people to have a mind set of not to procrastinate or complaining of what they have been ordered to do or wanting to do and just do it. It really had a big impact to the people, it also boost and encouraged more people to exercise than just jogging. I am also impressed by the revolution of advertising, they have really improved a lot from papers, to newspapers, to magazine, to television, to radio, to internet. Apart from that, it is also hard for them to produce and advertisement as they had to push very hard to reach to their respective goals. Brands in advertising are dangerous at some point because, people tend to be bias of the way of how they think towards the particular brand. For example if they have a bad image towards a brand the next time they come across it again they will straight away reject it without considering.
Apart from that, after watching the video it did not enlighten me a lot about the future prospects of field of advertising. That is because I have no interest in the field of advertising although it shows that how much they have improved over the years. Other than that, if the society does not have advertisement the first thing it will happen is that people will not know what is advertising and the field of advertising will never exist. The papers, newspapers, magazines and the media would just be a grey and boring thing to read at, people will just get bored of reading only news and no other stuffs. On top of that, the society will be progress slow to the trends as this also plays an important part in advertising. It also makes people difficult into wanting to find out what are the latest things, promotions or discounts if there is no advertising in the media. In conclusion, advertising is an important part in improvement of society. It keeps us entertained such as funny ads, meaningful ads, inspiring ads, teaching ads and up to date on the latest trends like new cars, new smartphone, promotion sales on groceries, discounts on furniture etc.
