The book that came straight to my mind is entitled “Desiring God” when I got this assignment. It talks about how the pursuit of pleasure is not optional. It is essential. Scripture has shown through revelation that the ultimate thing in life is to glorify God by taking pleasure in Him. Now, you might be thinking, “Weird.” In this paradigm-shattering or should I say paradigm-shifting work, John Piper, the author reveals that the debate between duty and delight does not exist. In fact, delight is our duty. John Piper will stun you again and again with life-impacting truths that you have saw in the Bible, which I am sure you, the reader or readers are familiar with but never dared to believe.

 

 

This book brings to you things concerning the happiness of God, scripture, money, prayer, worship, mission, marriage, love and even something like suffering. This book also speaks of the term ‘Hedonism’. What is hedonism, what it means to be a hedonist, and finally what is a Christian hedonist? Compared to other authors who speak on this kind of ‘genre’ of book, John Piper is the type of author who writes in a style which is compassionate but yet never failing to diminish the emphasis on what he is trying to say to make the point or a point. This book also discusses and debates on some of the controversial and what people would say “This is unfair” kind of issues like “Is God less glorious because...” and “How can God ordain evil but yet not evil?”

 

 

When one reads this book, it will be, for most, confusing maybe or even absurd, unhappiness, unsatisfactory, have a sense of unjust, relief perhaps, joy, qualm and who knows maybe even to a point of deep, real contrite.
